In Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, Son Goku is the greatest hero in the universe! And that’s the whole problem for the work’s author, Akira Toriyama. In a 1966 interview with WIRED Japan magazine, translated into English by Kanzenshuuthe mangaka confessed that he was dissatisfied with the way his character was portrayed in both adaptations. The author only saw his hero fighting the mightiest warriors in the cosmos, not as a “hero who wants to save the widow and the orphan” – like in the two animes. Finally, Dragon Ball Super managed to prove that Son Goku is not a “virtuous hero”, and how? By exhibiting motivations that aren’t heroic at all. He only wants to fight the strongest in the multiverse and doesn’t think about the consequences of his actions.
An anime that shows the true personality of Goku
In the Dragon Ball Super Universe Survival Saga arc, Son Goku molests the character Grand Zeno to hold a tournament that will challenge the strongest fighters in the universe. From this fact, the Tournament of Power arose, however, all fighters from other universes eliminated by Goku disappeared completely. This is where the personality of the protagonist comes through. Indeed, his mind is more preoccupied with the desire to fight the mightiest warriors than with the destruction of the worlds caused by his deeds.. We can believe that after the extinction of several cosmos, our hero will realize his mistake and stop, but no, on the contrary, he continues to enjoy fighting. A personality far removed from the personality portrayed in Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, where his goal is to fight evil. But it is also a vision that comes closer to the original idea of its designer Akira Toriyama.
