I have a cheap smart TV with Android TV, which means two things: that I appreciate what is the best operating system for a TV because of the number of apps available and the customization it allows, and that my TV equipment is cheap. And yes, having a modest chip and memory says a lot about its performance. While you can’t do miracles with what’s available, the app I want to talk about today helps me control memory usage to keep my TV running as smoothly as possible.
The application in question is X-plore File Manager, it is a file explorer and it is available on the Google Play Store for Android TV. Although it’s not the only file explorer available (another good alternative is File Commander), it’s the one with the most I love how comprehensive it is, because it’s free and has no ads (in the description of the Play Store it is detailed that there are advertisements, but I have never found them).
X-File Manager, a Swiss army knife for Android TV
If you have an entry level TV like mine or it starts to slow down for no apparent reason, it seems essential to install this file manager to solve it (or improve it, at least) in a few minutes. The idea is essentially to eliminate applications and services that eat up the TV’s memory and which we can do without.
Among the many features of X-Plore, the one that interests us for this mission is ‘disk map‘. I already anticipate that although explorer-style apps tend to be overwhelming due to all the information they offer, this handler is generally quite clear thanks to it being fully translated into Spanish and its visual interface (what more modern? yes).
Going into ‘Disk Map’ graphically and visually shows everything occupied by the files I have installed on my TV, allowing me to see two things: how much space does it take and what files can i delete. The icing on the cake is that there are times when the TV does not allow certain applications to be deleted, but that is not a problem: X-Plore is able to delete them from the root. To do this, you need to go to ‘Internal Shared Storage’ and move to the ‘Installed’ or ‘System’ folders.
Once I delete the dispensable files, normally I continue the maintenance of my television with another fundamental task to keep it as nimble as possible: to delete the cache of the TV, for which there is no need for applications: it is enough to enter the settings of my Android TV and in ‘Applications’, enter each of the applications and click on ‘Empty cache’. To top it all off, I use the Background Apps and Process List app to block services that consume a lot of RAM in the background from serving me.
Execute all these operations They don’t take more than five minutes and they run my basic TV hardware as well as possible.. Although you can download it on Android TV, it also works for such popular dongles as Chromecast with Google TV.
