It’s fitting that Toys for Bob, the studio behind the fun Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s about timewhose review you can read here— has chosen June, LGBTI pride month, to make an interesting announcement. When Crash Team Rumble goes on sale we will control the first non-binary character of the franchise: a bat cat named Catbat.

Catbat is a victim of the same experiments by Doctor Neo Cortex that Crash underwent. When she manages to escape, she receives the help of a kind stranger who introduces her to the world of rock n’ roll. This story is narrated through a digital comic that we share below, although at the moment it is only available in English.

As a non-binary character, Catbat does not identify as male or female and uses “they/them” pronouns in English. In Spanish there is an equivalent that is “elle”, but it is not widely accepted.

In an interview with KotakuDan Neil and Paul Yan —creative director of Crash Team Rumble and studio co-head Toys for Bob—explained that Catbat is inspired by singer David Bowie. He will be a character who can take advantage of his ability to fly to support his teammates from above. His voice in the game is that of Erika Ishii, a gender fluid person whom we have already heard in video games as Apex Legendsin which he voices Valkyrie.

Crash Team Bash will be a competitive multiplayer title that, in addition to the new non-binary character Catbat, will have many familiar faces from the games of Crash Bandicoot. It will go on sale for PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Series X | S on Tuesday June 20, 2023.
