Whether we like it or not, we have fully entered the era of generative Artificial Intelligence. In just a few months, dozens of projects have emerged that promise to revolutionize content creation; or condemn the creators forever. From ChatGPT and its ability to create texts, to Midjourney and its incredible artificial images, the potential is enormous in both cases.
Perhaps where AI can best prove itself is improve and expand the creations of human beings; This way creators won’t lose their work, they just have one more tool like Photoshop fill or video effects from any editor.
In this sense, an app that has become at the center of controversy in recent days is better understood. It’s called Uncrop, and it promises to be able to crop any photo; In other words, it claims to be able to take any photo and enlarge it with more details that weren’t shown in the original image.
The AI that amplifies the Mona Lisa
The clearest example that can be used to explain what exactly Uncrop is is also the most controversial: let’s imagine for a moment what is beyond Mona Lisa (o mona-lisa), the famous work of Leonardo da Vinci. One wonders how the landscape continued on the sides, or what the sky looked like, or quite simply, how the author could have imagined the details that he ultimately did not paint in the painting.
To say this is already the equivalent of ultimate heresy for many people. Who if not Da Vinci himself would be able to answer these questions? But as long as Da Vinci is gone, an AI can try to figure out how he would react. In the tests carried out by EL ESPAÑOL – El Androide Libre, Uncrop offered several possibilities. One of the most convincing extended the landscape and the city which appear behind the model, even adding the sun to one end. Although the join is not perfect, keeping the borders of the box, the effect is very striking, as are the other answers: in another case, the AI did not dare to paint more, contenting itself with extend borders.
Uncrop’s AI is able to enlarge photographs as well as illustrations
But you don’t need to create one of the greatest works of art in history to take advantage of this AI, of course. Uncrop will be particularly useful for anyone who needs more detail on their images, but you have no chance of getting it. For example, if we have a vertical photo of a person and we want it horizontal, there aren’t many options; Uncrop is able to make it horizontal by adding more things paying attention to the details of the original photo. In one test, for example, the AI was able to convincingly enlarge a photo of flowers, showing more similar vegetation and adding an effect to hide errors in the AI’s image generation.
No, these types of AI tools aren’t perfect yet, but we may not need them. We may simply want to enlarge an image and this application will help us; sometimes that’s just what we need.
