For 15 years now, people in Hollywood have been trying to get live action robotics made movie. Specifically, it’s a movie based on it robotechs first and most popular season, which was a western repackaging of a Japanese masterpiece macross.
In 2007, it was Tobey Maguire who took charge of a Warner Bros. production that ultimately fell through. Eight years later, Sony dared a change Aquaman Director James Wan attached, but also it would eventually be canceled. Now we get one third and a more recent attempt where Sony tries again, to announce in 2022 that hawk eye Director Rhys Thomas will attempt to bring the adventures of Rick Hunter and his friends to the big screen.
That third attempt might have a better chance of actually being successful; Regular Hollywood politics and business aside, previous attempts were also plagued by a long-running legal standoff that had prevented Western releases macross products for decades. They were largely fixed in 2021which clearly paves the way for Sony’s renewed attempts at getting one robotics made movie.
Anyway, enough background information! This is an art piece, not a history lesson. But I had to spell it all out clearly so we’re clear on what’s being presented tonight: an art collection from this mid-level project, Sony’s aborted first attempt after suffering a major setback in 2018 when Wan had to drop out Aquamanwas quietly canceled in 2019.
Most of the illustrations focus on the SDF-1, Macross Island (whose vibrancy Price absolutely nails here), and redesigned Veritech fighter jets, although there are also some works that feature original plot elements (like the oil rigs).), that would have been new for this particular film.
These pieces were all created by veteran artist Col Price, who has contributed to series like this obliterate And battlefield, and whose work we have previously featured on the website. You can see more of Col’s stuff on his site personal page And ArtStation page.
