news culture Why should you watch Secret Invasion, the next MCU series? The actors (Emilia Clarke, Samuel L. Jackson…) respond.
The release of the next MCU series on Disney+ is fast approaching. But before that we were able to attend the press conference with Samuel L. Jackson, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Kevin Feige, Cobie Smulders and many others. A chance to find out why you think watching Secret Invasion is a must?
Secret Invasion, the MCU spy series
It’s been a while since MCU fans have had a series to relate to. The newest? She Hulk, which ended airing last October and didn’t really get unanimous support. But Marvel isn’t backing down and will soon offer us a series of a completely different genre: Secret invasion. Say goodbye to over-the-top action or comedic aspects, This miniseries offers a darker atmosphere and mixes espionage and mystery. And who speaks of Marvel series, of course, means a focus on a specific character: Nick Fury. With this choice, the series moves a bit away from the history of the comics Secret invasion.
The latter is forced to go to Earth after learning of the existence of an invasion of shapeshifting Skrulls. He finds Rodhey, Maria Hill and Talos there in particular and will join them to put an end to this invasion and save humanity. However, due to the nature of these creatures, it is particularly difficult here to stir them up. It therefore promises hopeless cliffhangers and a really complicated puzzle to solve. What is certain is that the notion of trust will be at the heart of this new adventure.
According to Kevin Feige (executive producer) we can still expect a similar tone as a buddy movie, as was the case Captain Marvel. This time the “Dude” by Nick Fury will be Talos instead. But according to Ali Selim (director) we should also find some of the atmosphere of Captain America: The Winter Soldier in Secret Invasion, but also films like The third man or La conversationall sprinkled with a tone a little more “human”. Also in the last few episodes, the guy promises us a change of tone: “There’s a point in the story where Nick Fury realizes it’s his own fight and in a way he becomes a quintessential American western hero. The tone changes and suggests a Nick Fury à la John Wayne.” you would have understood Secret invasion offers a very different Nick Fury than we’ve known before.
Nick Fury like you’ve never seen him before
As Samuel L. Jackson explained during the press conference, this is his character’s second appearance since the famous snap. And this event changed him: “He’s a little bit tired and a little bit vulnerable.” Secret invasion will therefore offer us a less confident and imposing Nick Fury, a bold choice for such a charismatic character. But it’s also a chance to really get to know him. For the first time, the MCU has given Nick Fury deeper scenes. We will even discover his intimacy, his house, his habits. It was a real pleasure for Samuel L. Jackson to play this new approach: “The more you know him, the more you learn to love him.”
But he’s not the only character who appears in a new light with this series. General Skrull Talos, for example, will be terribly torn. “It’s really a bad time for him” explains Ben Mendelsohn. As for Rhodey (Don Cheadle), he’s going to ditch the War Machine costume to show us a more political side of himself.
And whoever says new series also says new characters. You’ll find new faces in the MCU with Kingsley Ben-Adir (the villain Gravik), Olivia Colman (MI6 agent Sonya Falsworth) and Emilia Clarke (G’iah, daughter of Talos). The latter also shared her joy at being part of this new adventure: “Who on earth doesn’t want to be surrounded by all these incredible people? WHO?”. Olivia Colman also admitted that she was dying to work on a Marvel project: “They called me. They said the word Marvel and I accepted it immediately.”
Working for Marvel is great!
Ben Mendelsohn
But let’s get back to the character of Olivia Colman. During the press conference Samuel L. Jackson described Sonya as “Possibly the most dangerous woman in the UK”only that. Suffice it to say that seeing this actress in such a role makes one want to delve deeper into the series. As for the big villain, Gravik, Kingsley Ben-Adir said he was inspired to play him by those in the James Bond franchise. Suffice it to say that it is promising!
Convinced of the actors? See you from June 21st to discover Secret Invasion on Disney+, with one episode per week. Here we have already seen the first two episodes and we are talking to you in this article.
