In some surprising news, it appears that Diablo 4 has made Blizzard more than Diablo Immortal, has been on the market for a year. Activision Blizzard recently revealed that Diablo 4 alone brought in more than $666 million in sales in just five days.
While we don’t have specific numbers on Diablo Immortal’s revenue, it’s estimated players spent $525 million on the free-to-play game in its first year.
That’s according to Data.ai (spotted by PCGamesN), which estimates that Diablo Immortal’s 22 milli on player base collectively spent more than $525 million on the game, making it the top grossing game worldwide. Number 24 of mobile games.
However, these figures come with some important caveats. For starters, these numbers don’t include the PC version of Diablo Immortal, available through the Battle.net launcher. They also don’t include third-party Android launchers anywhere in the world, including China.
China is a major player in the mobile market, with Chinese gamers accounting for the highest percentage of lifetime Diablo Immortal spending at an estimated 37%, compared to 24% in the US. Given the popularity of Android in China, there may be a significant portion of revenue not included in this report, let alone PC revenue.
In fact, it’s hard to compare a premium game starting at $70 on consoles and PC with a free offering for mobile that’s also playable on PC. Diablo Immortal has come under fire for its over-monetization, and player sentiment has largely focused on that.
But Diablo 4 is also a premium product that includes microtransactions on day one and promises a battle pass in the near future, so the scale doesn’t exactly match. However, we shouldn’t read too much into these numbers, especially as interests shift.
For example, the hype surrounding Diablo 4 could boost Diablo Immortal’s numbers as it is the most modern representation of the legendary series, which Data.ai points out could be the reason for the sharp rise in US player spending on the game. However, as more and more people opt for Diablo 4, those who haven’t yet invested in immortality will give up.
