Late last year, Square Enix announced that its racing title Chocobo GP would not receive “any further large-scale updates” and would end sales of the paid currency Ithril in January 2023, which allowed players to spend real money to unlock additional content.
Now, in the latest development, the US eShop listing for Chocobo GP has been updated with a “release date” of June 15, 2023 (that was last week). So what’s going on here? Well, it seems to be related to the Chocobo GP “Lite”, which was recently delisted. Users with this free version will now be prompted to upgrade to the full game for $49.99
In case you missed it, all of the game’s existing paid content is now seemingly also unlockable with Tickets and Gil Coins – with no Ithril in sight.
Nintendo Life has revis ited the latest version of the Final Fantasy themed racing game (1.4.1 – released February 2023) and can confirm that you can now unlock characters like Cloud Strife without having to worry about buying a season pass or shelling out any real money. You can get it with 50 tickets instead.
Other characters, items and unlocks are also available with Tickets and Gila. Both of these currencies can be obtained by solving missions and leveling up in multiple modes in Chocobo GP. As you can see in the screenshot, the Ithril Shop has been completely removed, leaving only the Ticket and Gil Shop:
