When buying a personal computer, the majority of Spaniards (67.43% according to Statcounter) choose a model with Windows; by comparison, only 2.3% of Spaniards use ChromeOS, but that’s hardly surprising given that the initial priority was cheap Chromebooks for students and undemanding users who just wanted a cheap laptop.
But Google has been trying to shake off that image for a few years now, expanding the Chromebook concept into more feature-packed, high-performance laptops, with little success; Pixelbooks were going to perform the same function as Pixel phones, demonstrating what’s possible with ChromeOS, but Google had to close its development division last year to cut costs.
That doesn’t mean Google has abandoned the Chromebook concept, far from it; quite the contrary. That same year has already seen a commitment to Chromebook gaming laptops, designed for gaming, and now another premium laptop concept based on the Google system has arrived.
It would be the Chromebook X
As revealed 9to5Googlethe company is preparing a new type of device, which would be called “ChromebookX”, which would be a leap over the current cheap models. It would consist of a new range of high-quality devices, and which would include both laptops and tablets; it would be something like the next step beyond just a Chromebook.
The purpose of this new branding is to help the user differentiate between the different Chromebook models available. As we’ve discussed, the Chromebook brand is associated with low-cost laptops that fall short of the demands of the most enthusiastic users; but ChromeOS has been able to fill them for a while nowit’s just that they don’t know because the products don’t differ from each other.
In recent years, ChromeOS has had the ability to install Android apps, run Linux programs, and even run Steam and some of the world’s most popular video games. a version of Minecraft for Chromebook was also released recently, identical to the version available for Windows computers.
It therefore makes sense to launch a more powerful range of notebooks, able to take advantage of these and future developments, demonstrating the potential of ChromeOS. That’s where the Chromebook X comes in, whose name could change ahead of launch; On the outside, in addition to branding, they will differ from normal models in details such as a new boot screen.
But the real difference these Chromebook Xs have to normal Chromebooks will be in the “hardware.” Google will impose a series of requirements on manufacturers to be able to use the brand new, including a certain amount of RAM, a higher than normal quality webcam and a higher resolution screen. Google also has a list of accepted processors, including the latest ranges from AMD and Intel.
These “hardware” requirements will be necessary to the exclusive functions that the Chromebook X will have. For example, in these templates, ChromeOS will allow you to enhance video calls with automatic subtitles, a blur effect for the background, and voice isolation to improve understanding. Changes are also expected such as new dynamic wallpapers that will change depending on the time of day, as well as locally stored Google Drive files taking advantage of the laptop’s larger capacity.
It is not yet known when the first Chromebook X will arrive, although the leak expects it to be at the end of the year, considering that the reference to the new range already appears in the beta. of ChromeOS.
