The first thing we need to know is that there are currently two RAM memory standards on the market. First, we have DDR4, where each module has at least 8 GB and a base frequency of 3200 MHz. More recently, DDR5 RAM has arrived, starting at 16 GB per module and a base frequency of 6,000 MHz.
Depending on the processor we choose, we will need one standard or another. The truth is that for our article the type is irrelevant, what matters is the use that we will give to the system, as well as the software that we will use.
It depends on the general usage and the programs we install
First of all, we have to talk about the operating system. Windows 10 sets a minimum of 2 GB RAMbut Windows 11 already ask for 8 GB minimum. We remind you that the launch of Windows 12 is scheduled for 2024-2025 and it would not be abnormal for it to require more than 8 GB.
Therefore, the current minimum according to Microsoft is 8GB, but that may be awfully tight for us. The reason is that later we will use different programs, such as a browser, editing tools or a game.
Google Chrome it’s a puzzle in terms of RAM memory consumption. This program typically consumes around 6 GB of RAM with around 10 tabs open. Therefore, if we have 8 GB, this program would occupy 75% of the available RAM, which can lead to system slowdown problems.
If you are going to play, be aware that some modern games are beginning to require 16 GB RAMas Hogwarts Legacy. It is not the only one, there are other games that ask for the same and even double if we are going to play in 4K resolution. This implies that you must have a good graphics card, a good processor and a large amount of RAM.
How much RAM should you buy?
We are going to leave you our recommendation in the most common scenarios taking into account the requirements of Windows 11 and the most recent games. Then it’s up to you to make the decision about it.
Office and multimedia
You will most likely be using Google Chrome or, failing that, Microsoft Edge, the default Windows browser. If you want to take advantage and prevent the equipment from “hanging”, you must install at least 16 GB. It may seem like a lot, but between Chrome, the background software and Windows Defender, it’s not crazy .
Games
Here we depend a lot on the resolution and the type of games we are going to enjoy. Playing Fortnite is not the same as playing Cyberpunk 2077 or Howgarts Legacy. There’s also a big difference between gaming at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K.
For 1080p resolution and most titles, 16GB should suffice. If we want to play comfortably without worrying about anything else, we should already opt for 32 GB. Whereas if you want to play in 4K with Ray Tracing and other active stories, you consider buying 32 GB.
Photo and/or video editing
Another increasingly common case is photography and/or video editing, an important sector today. These programs depend a lot on the amount of RAM during the rendering process. For this reason, the amount directly affects how long it may take to complete the process. At least 32 GB is generally recommended, but let’s not rule out installing twice as much, to work more comfortably.
Streaming
It is a more common practice, especially, to transmit while playing. Whatever the game, this practice requires a large amount of RAM, in addition to other powerful components. You should think about installing at least 32 GB of RAM, but it’s better to go “spare” with 64 GB of RAM.
