You don’t need to be a detective to see Stephen King’s influence on the original Alan Wake, even ignoring that Allen quotes him at the beginning of the game. But in an interview with Eurogamer, Remedy boss Sam Lake talked about how important it was to him to get a word from King himself. “When I was working on the original Alan Wake, I was really, really eager to start with a quote from him,” Lake told Eurogamer. “From what I understand, he wants $1 for us to use it. [It was] Very generous. ”

A dollar is obviously a pretty good deal in terms of intellectual property, and the brand feels pretty good for the general spirit Kim seems to be embodying. This is how the game starts, and without it, the start probably wouldn’t be as good.

Remedy’s next entry, of course, is Alan Wake 2, which launches on October 17th. Presumably, the sequel is more of a survival horror game than the first, so The King’s influence may be stronger. But sadly it won’t be getting a physical release.
