iOS 17 Visual Search

The betas continue to arrive and we continue to discover very interesting news in the new operating system of those of Cupertino. And that’s it, iOS 17 includes big Visual Look improvements Up, Apple’s feature that identifies items in photos you take where it also shows you additional information about them. As part of iOS 17, this feature has been expanded and will be able to recognize the most common “pilot” or “little lights” that come on on your car’s dashboard indicating that something is wrong and that you should see it again (and now without having to fight with the huge car instruction manual you can’t even remember where you saved).

Improved Visual Look Up includes icons that they range from warning lights to confusing symbols for less common things like vents, defrost, etc. On Apple’s own site that refers to the preview of iOS 17, those of Cupertino announce some improvements for Visual Look Up that will also arrive this year:

  • Search for dish recipes similar from a photo taken.
  • Find what you just picked up: When you select an object in a photo, you can directly search for information about it.
  • Visual video search: Pause the video at any frame and tap the info icon to learn more about an object on the screen.

What Apple doesn’t mention, however, is this Visual Look Up extension to recognize car symbols thanks to iOS 17. This change was spotted by users on Reddit earlier this month. Even can identify multiple symbols and icons on the same imageso if your car’s dashboard is lighting up on multiple fronts and anxiety is starting to kick in, Visual Lookup will help.

On the other hand, in addition to Visual Look Up identifying the symbols in your photo, iOS 17 offers quick links for additional information about each symbol in Safari. Right in the Photos app, it gives you the name of the icon and a brief description of what it means.

As you already know, To access Visual Look Up, use the Photos app on your iPhone and tap an image. If iOS 17 has identified symbols, you will see a special icon in the bottom toolbar. For car symbols, this icon will look like a steering wheel. You can also touch the “i” icon, if the steering wheel symbol does not appear automatically to access this feature on photos in which it detects something.
