I had been senior vice president of industrial design at Apple since 1997!
Steve Jobs y Jony Ive They were a duo that marked the history of Apple like no other. Together, they succeeded in establishing an approach focused on design and user experience as fundamental elements of the company’s strategy. After Jobs’ physical departure, many believed that Ive was the natural successor. However, this did not happen and to the surprise of many, in 2019, he left the firm he joined in 1992.
Although I have officially assured that he is leaving Apple to pursue other projects, there has always been speculation about the veracity of this reason. This 2023 will have been four years since Jony Ive left Apple. In some ways it seems like the creator of many of Apple’s iconic products never left, and in others there’s almost no trace of the features that represented his design vision.
Apple Sin Jony Ive
Jony Ive joined Apple in 1992 and became senior vice president of industrial design in 1997.. During his time at Apple, he played a key role in creating some of the company’s most iconic products, including the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad, setting trends that have persisted until today, but his departure also opened up other avenuesfor some more practical.
flexible minimalism
Aesthetically, Apple products have given in to the obsession to lose weight. Many Apple versions now look thicker if that translates to a more useful and responsive design.
One of these examples is the MacBook Pro in 2021 with an HDMI slot and an SD card reader. Previously, the only ports available on Apple laptops (aside from the headphone jack) were configured as USB-C.
Details
Some things remain unchanged and that is positive. Apple continues to be a detail-oriented company and one of the great examples comes through with the Vision Prowhose details demonstrate the care that the company puts into every aspect.
The Digital Crown lets you switch between modes and see how the on-screen keyboard buttons intuitively light up when you slide your finger over them. And it’s a perfect example that reveals the Apple’s ongoing commitment to user experience and their pursuit of perfection in every product they create.
“Design is how it works”
With few exceptions, I have always tried to be true to the thinking of Jobs, who used to say “design is how it works”. Apple’s work today shows that Jony Ive did not work alone and is one of the reasons why his influence on the design team within the company is still maintained. One example is the Apple Watch Ultra, an aesthetically pleasing and comfortable device that stands out for its emphasis on real functionality.
After leaving Apple, Ive devoted himself to his design firm LoveFrom, of which Apple was a client. During this time, I continued to be involved in the design of Apple-branded products such as the Vision Pro and the 24-inch iMac.
But as is logical, he is now dedicated to taking his passion for design beyond the world of technology. Thus, this year he was commissioned to create the emblem for the coronation of King Carlos III
Despite the comparisons, Ive will always be a reference when it comes to talking about Apple and his long career continues to be recognized. In April this year, Jony Ive received the Edison Lifetime Design Award.
