The original Mario Kart isn’t the easiest game in the series, especially if you’re not familiar with the peculiarities brought about by Mode 7, but that’s a relative thing. It’s okay, it’s still easy to watch, it’s easy to play, that’s why it’s still selling billions of copies Mario Kart games to date.
But what if you changed just one thing about it? What if you kept everything else the same, but swapped out the vantage point behind the driver on the top screen for…a series of static camera angles, like the old one? resident Evil games.
It looks like it, and it looks like hell.
This was made by SNES (and especially Mario Kart) hacker MrL314, and what I absolutely love about it isn’t the chilling horror of the angles themselves, but the fact that no compromises have been made to show where the player is. All you have to do is remember that you’re Mario (in this case) and hope for the best (which explains why the AI drivers are so calm about this, while in every new cut you can see Mario scooting around weirdly, as if it were an ice rink). .
