game news It was impossible to predict! This 20-year-old license is making an unexpected comeback
To everyone’s surprise, this series of platform games for PS1 makes a comeback in a compilation of the three original titles. An attempt to gauge the mood for the development of a fourth episode?
Nobody could have predicted this return
When nobody expected Limited Run Games company has announced Gex Trilogy, a compilation of three platform games of the same name released on PS1 between 1994 and 1999. This project is created in collaboration with Square Enix, the holder of the license rights since the Japanese company took over Crystal Dynamics, the original developers of the saga, before being sold to the Embracer Group in 2022. This collection will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and on PC via Steam and will include Gex, Gex: Enter the Gecko and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko. It is currently unknown which versions will be adjusted in the compilation, but it is certain that they will be the PS1 editions.
Iconic PS1 platformers
For those unfamiliar with the saga: Gex is a series of platform games in which you embody a gecko named Gex, which is a kind of lizard with the fake expression of a James Bond-style secret agent. Everything takes place in a rather humorous atmosphere that doesn’t shy away from parodying both American society and television in general. While the first episode was in 2D, the following two feature 3D graphics reminiscent of Crash Bandicoot. These three titles are being developed by Crystal Dynamics, a Californian studio that we later know for the Legacy of Kain saga, then the Tomb Raider trilogy on PS2 and its 2013 reboot.
Back in the days of Gex, the developers were so proud that the gecko has been the studio’s mascot since 1998. However, when the studio was acquired by publisher Eidos Interactive in 1998, which was in turn acquired by Square Enix in 2009, the rights to the character were sold to the Japanese company. If Crystal Dynamics is now owned by Embracer Group since the studio’s resale in 2022, Gex remains a license from Square Enix, which explains their involvement in this compilation. So we just have to wait for a release date to rediscover the adventures of the most famous video game gecko.
