It looks like some images and some videos game console Project Q, the upcoming streaming handheld, has leaked, and we get a rough first look at what it actually looks like.
Several images of Project Q were shared online this weekend, though they don’t appear to show the final version of the UI, VGC reported. The images, shared on Twitter by tech enthusiast Zuby-Tech, show that the handheld appears to be running a version of Android, presumably a developer build that allows for some tinkering. You can also get a full look at the console in the video Zuby_Tech shared, and yes, it does look like an elongated PS5 controller with a screen in the middle.
The screen itself also appears to be a touchscreen, but it’s not clear from the leaked video that it’s going to be used for anything other than navigating menus. It’s also a good replacement for games that use a touchpad, since handhelds obviously don’t have one.
When the portable streaming console was announced in May, we didn’t get many spec details, other than that it had an 8-inch LCD screen capable of 1080p resolution at 60 fps. You’ll also need the games installed on the PS5 to play them, but does that also mean you can stream and buy physical games.
It’s unclear when the handheld is expected to be released. As part of a recent court hearing related to Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft did notice It believes Sony will release the Project Q later this year for less than $300. But it’s not an official confirmation by any means, so we’ll have to wait and see what Sony has planned. Maybe then they’ll figure out how to turn it into a PS Vita 2.
