2023 will be the culmination of the takeover of Activision Blizzard King by Microsoft. A long buying process that has made us all addicted to every Lis novelty. A process that included a trial run between the FTC and Microsoft that allowed us to learn a lot of internal industry data and curiosities.
But everything is already doomed to its end and the realization of the definitive purchase. When the time comes, Activision and all of its studios will become part of Xbox Game Studios. That’s why in this house we wanted to review everything the company has in development, both upcoming games and those that have already launched and will receive support in the years to come.
Expansions, seasons and new content
We start with what has already been launched and which we can enjoy on many devices. Starting with the titles available on mobile, there are several Blizzard games. The oldest is Hearthstone, the popular card game based on the Warcraft universe which releases three expansions a year. Each of them has a new theme and 125 completely new cards, so every four months the game has a good dose of content.
The other game currently receiving mobile content is Diablo Immortal. The mobile version of the popular franchise just got a new playable class, Blood Knight, with more to come. Also, the game follows a season system, so every now and then there is new content.
Finally, we can’t forget Call of Duty: Mobile, the mobile version of the Activision shooter that regularly receives content.
Leaving mobile, console and PC games behind, Activision currently has three games that it offers ongoing support. The first is Warzone 2.0, the free-to-play battle royale version of Call of Duty, which goes along with the main installments and adds new content on a monthly basis. At the same time, we have Modern Warfare 2, the title released in 2022 and which continues to receive new seasons today.
Also, without leaving the shooter aspect, we find the seasons of Overwatch 2. Blizzard’s hero shooter has become free with its sequel and every six weeks it launches a new season in which it always adds a new hero, map or game mode.
Another game that will continue to receive content will be the latest title from our favorite marsupial: Crash Rumble Battle. If the players follow, this competitive aspect of the license constitutes a good basis for offering content continuously over time.
Finally, the recently released Diablo IV. Blizzard’s ARPG just released its first season and I hope they will continue to release more in the future. Along with this system, new expansions already in development will arrive, along with new classes and events, as well as, you assume, world bosses.
New games in development by Activision
We are entering the realm of these totally new games that are currently in development. Officially, Activision has two developments underway. A recently confirmed, the new Call of Duty, which will finally be Modern Warfare 3 and of which we have already told you about some of its first details, such as the possibility of wearing our Modern Warfare 2 agents.
He the second confirmed project is the new survival title created by Blizzard. The game doesn’t have an official title or an approximate release date, but we do know that it will be set in a new fantasy universe.
Finally, we wanted to mention a project that Activision would have been working on for several years. Officially, his announcement was never made, so we are not entirely sure that this project will continue its course. But a few years ago when Bungie and Activision parted ways and Activision lost Destiny, there was a rumor that the company was making its own game to make up for the loss. It is true that this rumor never materialized and neither Activision nor anyone else has confirmed its development.
It could be that it was just an idea to find a way to compensate for the loss of Destiny and that it will come to nothing in the face of the success of Warzone, or it may still be in development and now with the purchase by Microsoft it will receive a boost in its development and will arrive as soon as possible. Launch directly on Xbox Game Pass?
We close this little review by recalling that it is possible that there are currently more games in the works of which we still do not know anything. The companies work in the greatest secrecy on their developments and it is only when they are officially announced that we know it. So they could still have more than one surprise up their sleeve.
