Android KitKat will almost definitely melt in the August heat, as Google has announced that will stop supporting this version of Android in your Google Play services.
Two years ago, Google End of support for Google Play Services of Jelly Bean and APIs 16, 17 and 18. Now it’s the turn of APIs 19 and 20, those of Android KitKat.
KitKat, delivered to itself
Android gains a new version every year, and backward compatibility support needs to be adjusted to avoid having to port a lot of features and services to operating systems that were released without them. KitKat’s time has comethe version of Android released ten years ago, in October 2013.
Google Play Services Version 23.30.99 will be the last for KitKatwhich does not mean that the system stops working immediately: it will continue to work for the time being, as always, although over time it will not receive any more news and, since it no longer has support, when something breaks -and it will break sooner or later- Google will not fix it.
The change really won’t affect too many users. Although KitKat has been one of the most popular versions for years, the latest data we have indicates that KitKat is on less than 1% of active Android devices.
For its part, many of the new features that Google retroactively ported to older versions through Google Services, such as Nearby Sharing, never made it to KitKat. Applications, in addition, have long since increased the minimum requirements beyond KitKat or are about to do so: WhatsApp will stop supporting KitKat in October.
