In a new video from Ubisoft about its upcoming war of stars game, the publisher talked about creating an authentic game war of stars Experience. In this context outlaws will feature Tatooine, the most famous (and most used) desert planet in the galaxy.
In June, Ubisoft announced Star Wars Outlaws, a new open-world action game set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back And Return of the Jedi and starring villain and thief Kay Vess. And because that’s the way it is War of stars, In a franchise based on ragtag groups of people coming together, you won’t be alone: you have a cute alien pet and (according to the internet) oddly sexy droid partner. It all looks great, and for many fans of the sci-fi series, it’s the open world war of stars Game they’ve been craving for decades. And if you’re worried that this is so big and new war of stars The game wouldn’t feature Tatooine, well, good(?) news: it does. Of course it does.
In their July 23 video, Massive and Ubisoft revealed that Tatooine was making its original debut war of stars Movie A new hopewill be One of the vast worlds that players can visit and explore In Star Wars Outlaws. That’s ok I think. But it gets really strange that this small, remote world seems to be the center of everything.
Massive says players will be able to visit Mos Eisley, another town that Obi-Wan and Luke Skywalker visit Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope. It also looks like Jabba The Hutt is staying on the famous planet and is probably willing to make a deal with the players or screw them if you don’t do what he wants. He’s a moody alien.
“It’s not just about recreating Tatooine as you know it,” he said outlaws Art and world director Benedikt Podlesnigg. “Referring to the classic sources of spaghetti westerns, we sought to recreate an authentic mood and atmosphere while building new landmarks to continue the already established story.”
And while that all sounds well and good, I’m really tired of having to rediscover Tatooine every time war of stars Movie or game launches. Even as Ubisoft promises new areas and ideas, it’s still the same ball of dust that has been over-represented in this famous galaxy far, far away.
Please stop making me visit Tatooine
Look I’m a war of stars Nerd. I understand why so many movies, TV shows, comics, and games keep coming back to Tatooine. The desert planet is iconic. It’s one of the very first things we’ve ever seen war of stars. It set the tone for the franchise and helped inspire the future look of the series. Even people who don’t know much about it war of stars Learn about the desert planet with the two suns and the cantina. So for us fans of the franchise, it’s an important place.
But in war of starsTatooine was originally meant to be a remote planet that nobody really cares about. In Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Says Obi-Wan verbatim it is “small” and “remote”. It’s a poor, crime-ridden wasteland that very few people in the entire galaxy know about or want to visit. It’s such a remote planet that Obi-Wan can hide out there mostly undetected.
But today, decades later war of stars When the media starts breaking stories about Tatooine, Obi-Wan starts to look like an idiot. The guy has apparently chosen one of the busiest and most famous planets in the universe to hide Luke and himself. Oops!
I understand that for many creators, given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to recreate or revisit a planet in the galaxy, Tatooine is the dream. The most iconic and recognizable planet in one of the biggest franchises in human history. The birthplace of the series, the home of Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s hideout, the first world we met Han Solo in, etc.
Let’s visit some other planets or even new places
But with everyone desperate to return to Tatooine and tell new stories about the world, it has become the most boring and uninteresting place in the galaxy. Every time someone likes The Mandaloriana new character in this universe shows up and stays on Tatooine – often visiting a few key locations to serve the fans – I sigh and roll my eyes.
There are so many worlds war of stars that are equally cool and full of possibilities. If you need to revisit a place you’ve seen before, go elsewhere. Let’s explore Utapu, Naboo or Ryloth. Maybe check out Nar Shadda? Going back to the same world over and over is not only boring, it also makes the universe seem smaller and smaller.
To be fair to Massive and Ubisoft, Star Wars Outlaws also offers a new world as explained in the behind-the-scenes video. And I think this new planet, Toshara, looks great! I love the idea of creating something new war of stars Planet inspired by the African savannah. This is a really fresh and exciting place to explore.
As for Tatooine, well, I was a war of stars fan all my life. And that’s long enough to know that I’ll be visiting Tatooine in video games, books, comics, and movies until the day I die. This damn desert planet is just too popular for its own good.
