Video games are living a new golden age to frame. About to enter the new generation of consoles, there are still great titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 2 or Ghost of Tsushima, which already has a release date. Meanwhile, the film industry is once again setting its sights on great productions like Uncharted, Monster Hunter or The Last of Us, of which a series has just been confirmed on HBO.
Perhaps in that format he will be luckier than other adaptations that have not been as successful, see Assassin’s Creed. In most cases, the films do not capture the essence of the video game and remain halfway to capture that story that fits the time of the footage. Separate mention deserves Super Mario Bros. But that negative trend seems to be changing, at least in recent months. Although it must be said that Sonic The Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu have quite a few things in common, both have managed to look at other upcoming releases like Monster Hunter. Especially if Milla Jovovich is through. Next we will remember the 7 best video game movies that you can see right now (or the least bad) and it has been difficult to choose because there are tapes that are only correct and few that rub the protrusion.
Tomb Raider (2018)
It is obviously not the best video game movie, but it is saved from burning. First because her precedent completely de-conceptualized the figure of Lara Croft, then played by Angelina Jolie. And second, because she is much more faithful to the mature heroine that the Tomb Raider reboot presented, making Croft a more fragile and human young woman. It will not be the most remembered movie, but it was quite correct in its plot.
Silent Hill (2006)
Starting from the basis that it is difficult to provoke the same sensations as a video game, Silent Hill formed an incredibly terrifying and enveloping atmosphere. And he had many positive reviews for his visuals as a brilliant production in its effects. The film did not try to replicate the same plot in any case and that is key in many cases for the result to be better. You know, comparisons are hateful. Instead, he got lost in the explanations to make himself understood, resulting in a product that was too long for anyone.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010)
Another adaptation with a good cast that failed to fully engage, but you can be proud of many other failed attempts. Because the result was an entertaining product that was preceded by Pirates of the Caribbean and that helped him a lot in the collection. However, it will only go down in history as an action movie from the heap that falls fast on reiterating ideas.
Sonic: The Hedgehog (2020)
This film has had a better reception than expected. Mainly because has no greater claim than to entertain. Nor can it be said that it is an adaptation that fully respects the video game because they have had to introduce the hedgehog to the real world with a shoehorn. Surely small of being extremely simple in dialogues and accusing a somewhat childish humor, where the best is the role of Jim Carrey.
Warcraft: Origin (2016)
Without being perfect, it has managed to be the highest grossing video game film in history, followed by Detective Pikachu. And he had a difficult challenge ahead because it is not easy to condense the lore of World of Warcraft in two hours of film. Again, he has hasty explanations while all the action that is not little happens. Therefore, it is a film designed for the game's players, where they will appreciate each director's wink and decision. It is clear that it is not for everyone, but it fulfills its entertainment function.
Detective Pikachu (2019)
There is always respect when animated characters are transferred to the big screen. And so far there was nothing like Detective Pikachu. The Pokemon Company's biggest fear is that the Pokemon would look nasty, cause disgust, and almost shut Mr. Mime out for that reason. Against all odds there was a fun movie in which Pikachu is the star and very true to the Nintendo 3DS game. How is Pikachu going to speak? The fans of the franchise wondered, thinking that this adaptation would be a disaster. Not only was it not, but they dared to introduce many Pokémon to make them feel part of the franchise.
Resident Evil (2002)
With all the terrible adaptations that have come after, now the movie series of Resident Evil seen from another prism. They exploited the genus of the virus mutation to say enough, but there is little to blame. It transformed the original story of the game, but carried away this idea and the name of Umbrella Corporation. Each user has their favorite installment as the one that discusses which video game is the best. And that is why we have special affection for this first part where Milla Jovovich came out reinforced to become the best-known face of Resident Evil away from consoles.
