The latest news from PlayStation fans was that the US broadcaster HBO and Naughty Dog will produce a series on The Last of Us. But when does production actually start and how long do we have to wait for the series?

The fact is: At the moment, the series on The Last of Us is already in an advanced planning phase, but there is currently no talk of a started production. There is a very specific reason for this, as producer and writer Craig Mazin ("Chernobyl") now explains in a podcast.
While fans are already speculating about who should play the main characters Joel and Ellie, Mazin now said that the start of production will be a long time coming. Since Naughty Dogs Neil Druckmann is also involved as co-writer in the work on the series, the Last of Us: Part II should now be completed and released for the PS4. Until the current status on May 29, 2020, there will be little change in the HBO series for the time being.
The ongoing development of the PS4 sequel is responsible for the fact that the production of the show "cannot start directly". But that also means: Basically, all preparations have already been made and he therefore expects to start "pretty soon" after the release of The Last of Us: Part II. "We have been talking about it for months and have already put together smaller plans and things," he continues.
Mazin also discussed why the once-planned film project for The Last of Us was canceled and has now been replaced by a series. In his opinion "needs (the story) length" in order to be adapted reasonably. "It's about developing a relationship on a long journey, so it really has to be a TV show," Mazin said.
