New evacuation shooter Exoborne unveiled at The Game Awards

A new extraction shooter has just been revealed live at The Game Awards! Axlburn – A third-person sci-fi shooter that puts you in the role of a soldier wearing an exoskeleton suit, charging through hail of bullets and bad weather.

The game, developed by Shakmob, doesn’t yet have a release date, platforms, or even any sense of scope. We’re going for pure atmosphere here, folks – so if you’re still in the market for a loot-and-shooter, this might be a game worth keeping an eye on.

Check it out here!

Sharkmob previously worked on Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodhunt. The game is a third-person battle royale, and Sharkmob announced its end via an official blog post earlier this year. The game doesn’t quite seem to be getting the traction it needs, and is now faltering with some form of undead, so the Tencent-backed studio is putting more of its focus on the growing sub-genre of extraction shooters.

The company was founded by several veteran developers who were responsible for The Division games. So it makes sense that they’d turn to a game that lets them flex their co-op shooting muscles in daylight, rather than slinking around in the shadows sucking blood. Add in some weather effects – which hopefully don’t just act as background decoration but actually have a meaningful impact on gameplay – and you might have an interesting experience here.

That being said, extraction shooters in the gaming market right now aren’t exactly niche and uncontroversial. Of course, you already have Escape from Tarkov, which has its good and bad aspects. Darkness and Darkness is going all the way, and hey, even Call of Duty has its own extraction mode. And then there’s Bungie’s upcoming game Marathon. If Exoborne doesn’t launch soon, it may find itself overshadowed.

So Exoborne finds itself in an interesting position. This will be one to watch for fans of the extraction style, and given the recent history, Sharkmob clearly had a lot to offer this project. Fingers crossed they succeed.
