There was a time when Google decided to create all kinds of spin off from Google Play: Google Play Movies, Google Play Books, Google Play Music and Google Play Games. After Google Play Music crashed, another family member who is about to disappear is Google Play Movies, also known as Google Play Movies.
Google Play Movies disappeared from our phones a long time ago, as the app eventually became the Google TV app, but survived on our televisions with Android TV until Google finds a place to put the content we purchased on the platform. Google has already prepared the replacements and has therefore made a decision for Google Play Movies: it will disappear permanently on January 17, 2024.
Goodbye, Google Play Movies
Google has been preparing the withdrawal of Google Play Movies for some time, although before closing it permanently it had to ensure that those who purchased films or series in the application could continue to access them elsewhere. For him, Google Play Movies survives on TVs and TV boxes equipped with Android TVbut not among those who have Google TV, since in this case the library is integrated into one of the tabs.
On Android TV, purchases we made on Google Play Movies also It will be integrated into a new tab called Purchases, which means you’re ready to bury the app forever. However, we’re talking about Google, so transitioning our movie and series library to its new home is going to be a little more complicated than strictly necessary.
Google Play Movies on Android TV
As published by Google in the Android TV user community, Google Play Movies will disappear next January 17, 2024 and where we can watch our purchased films and series will depend on the device we use:
- On TV and streaming devices equipped with Android TV: our films and series will appear in the tab Purchases from the home screen.
- A TV box with Android TV: We will have the films and series that we have purchased available in the YouTube application.
- On the Web: Our films and series purchased or “rented” on Google Play Films will be available on the YouTube site.
In other words, from January 17, you must go to either to the Purchases tab or to the YouTube app to continue watching the movies or series you have in your library, while Google Play Movies will join Google Play Music in the application sky. You have a little over a month to say goodbye.
