There were no surprises this week. After releasing the RC (Release Candidate) of iOS 17.2 last week, Apple officially launched this version worldwide for iPhone XS and later (including iPhone XR). This is the last major software update of the year for the iPhone.
There we find news that we have already told you about. They cover the wishes that many users have been asking for years.. These are not big revolutions, but they are small readjustments and new options that complement what has already been seen with the first versions of iOS 17.
The main new features of iOS 17.2
Throughout the beta versions of iOS 17.2, we have seen the new features it brings. The list is long, but if we want to stick to the strong points and which you can enjoy from the first minute, the most important is the following:
- New “Journal” application: Also known as “Diary” in English, Apple’s Diary application is incorporated as a tool in which we can write down our feelings every day (or every week) using texts, images and videos. It is expected that as we complete the entries, the application itself will allow us to remember past moments.

- Change notification tone and vibration: iOS finally supports such a simple feature that has been requested for years. We now find a list of new tones, in addition to the classics, configurable for notifications. Likewise, you can also customize the vibration as was previously the case with calls.
- New “Weather” widgets: Apple’s native ‘Weather’ application now receives new widgets which will provide a broader view of the maximum and minimum temperatures of the following days, sunset and sunrise or even complete information for the day. Like any other widget, it can be placed on any of our screens.

- Translate texts and images from the action button: If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, you will find that now in the action button settings you can add “Translate”, Apple’s native application which is used precisely for this; translate texts and images.
- Video recording for Apple Vision Pro: Apple Vision Pro’s virtual reality box (or glasses) is capable of playing spatial videos and now the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will be able to record this type of video. We must not forget that this device will only hit the market in 2024, but Apple is already preparing the ground with new iOS features like these.

- New privacy options: We now have the ability to verify the identity of the other person in iMessage so as not to find ourselves facing an imposter. Another novelty in this sense of privacy is that we can now prevent the “Photos” application from accessing our Apple Music history to create videos with background music.
- Apple Music playlists with our favorites: Now the platform can automatically create playlists based on all the content we have marked as favorites, whether songs, artists or albums.
On the other hand, it is confirmed that collaborative charts on Apple Music will have to wait. These appeared in the first betas of iOS 17.2, but disappeared in the latest ones. In this final version intended for the public either and knowing that Apple’s native applications are not updated independently, everything indicates that we will have to wait at least for the release of iOS 17.3.
How to update to iOS 17.2
To have iOS 17.2 on your iPhone you must follow the usual procedure. That is, go to Settings > General > Software Update. The version was released simultaneously worldwide, so it should be released now. Otherwise, try repeating the process several times.
We warn, however, that The update weighs a few GB and could be slower than expected. Everything will depend on Apple’s servers, so you also need to make sure you have a good Internet connection (preferably via Wi-Fi).

Apart from iOS 17.2, Apple also released updates for the rest of the devices. The highlight is iPadOS 17.2, which has new features similar to those seen on the iPhone. For the rest there are no major improvements, although several errors detected in previous versions are covered to optimize performance.
