Hideo Kojima has been trying to do weird things with the video game OD lately, and if some of Kojima Productions’ recently filed trademarks end up meaning what fans understand, it could include some social horror-esque mechanics.
In case you missed The Game Awards, OD is a horror game developed by the studio in partnership with Xbox. At the show we saw a typically weird trailer, which already yielded some interesting details, the appearance of Jordan Peele, and the phrase “like a movie, but also a new form of media”, whatever that means .

Since showing off the game, Kojima Productions seems to have been busy filing for some game-related trademarks in Japan, which have been Jason And courted by Reddit sleuths, who are busy unearthing the trailer with the kind of attention to detail usually reserved for criminal investigations.
These include “Social Screaming System” and “Social Cloaking System”, both of which are excellent alliterations if nothing else. As well as tying these to the trailer’s tagline “Dedicated to all gamers and screamers,” some fans seemed to interpret them as a hint that the game might contain some sort of social horror element.
One of the most interesting theories put forward on Reddit revolves around some potential FromSoftware-style mechanics that would allow you to interact with other players or have them influence how events in your game play out, while still allowing the game to retain a single player focus . Perhaps a more advanced version of Death Stranding’s similarly named “Social Stranding System” that lets players leave behind useful stuff that might then show up in other people’s games.
That said, “please don’t make it like Silent Hill: Ascension” seems to be the main wish of potential players.
It’s also worth noting that Hideo Kojima has a bit of an interest in the letter S (you can blame him, it’s a good letter), dating back to Metal Gear Solid’s S3 plans.
If you’re a die-hard Hideo Kojima fan, you might be happy to know that a documentary about him will be released on Disney+ next spring.
