In a new interview, Hideki Kamiya talks about the reasons for his surprising departure from PlatinumGames.
Over 17 years ago, Shinji Mikami, Atsushi Inaba and Hideki Kamiya co-founded the developer studio Seeds, which later became PlatinumGames. In September of this year, Kamiya unexpectedly announced his departure, leaving CEO Inaba as the last remaining member of the founding trio.
In an interview with IGN Kamiya now gave some insights into the motivations behind his decision. He had the feeling that the direction in which the company was moving did not correspond to his ideas as a developer:
“Without that element of trust I couldn’t continue working there and so I left so I could continue working in the direction I thought was right. I don’t think of games as products, but rather as works of art. I want to bring my artistry to the games and deliver games that can only be made by Hideki Kamiya, so that players can enjoy Hideki Kamiya’s games exactly as they are.”
“I have decided to leave the company and forge my own path to continue making games that reflect the developers who made them.”
Before his decision, he had long discussions about a possible departure with Atsushi Inaba, said Kamiya. Eventually an agreement was reached and he left the studio. A decision that the well-known game maker still doesn’t regret:
“As head of the company, Inaba also had his own ideas. Although his beliefs differed from mine, we discussed the matter thoroughly so that we were both happy with the outcome we came to.”
