Even in 2023, there will still be films that are not easy to get in good quality. “True Lies” was one such case. Director James Cameron recently explained why this is so in an interview.
But film fans get supplies: Four Cameron classics have been available on Apple TV since December 12th: “Aliens: The Return,” “Titanic,” “The Abyss” and “True Lies.” Blu-ray versions are expected to follow in the spring.
But the upgrade from True Lies is currently causing a stir.

Opinions differ on what a film should look like (also when it comes to FPS). AI was probably used in the remaster of Schwarzenegger’s action classic, like the film site JoBlo supposed. But see for yourself:
You can see it at first glance: In the picture on the right, the actors look too smooth, almost as if they were made of wax.
The author of the article on JoBlo admits that it doesn’t look as unnatural in the moving image as it does in the screenshot. Nevertheless, “True Lies” looks completely different in 4K than you are used to before. The grain is not that coarse and everything is “smooth”.
In this short video, Maxe explains to you what 4K resolution is exactly and whether we will have to switch to 8K soon:

What is 4K and do you need 8K?
You can find more examples of “True Lies” and how waxy the actors look in this one Reddit-Thread.
On X (formerly Twitter), Luke Ryan, who wrote for JoBlo, has very clear words for the 4K version of the Cameron film.

There is an interesting addition: Apparently Cameron’s other 4K re-releases don’t look like this, or at least it doesn’t matter as much as “True Lies.”
Artificial intelligence can also be a veritable source for bringing old films and series into the new millennium. Fans of the old Star Trek series, for example, use AI to see their captains in better resolution. TechCrunch and Tech Radar reported.
We have discussed in this article how CGI is ruining the cinema to some extent:
Finally we get old James Cameron blockbusters in contemporary resolution. This changes the look of a film, but in the case of “True Lies” it upsets some fans. What do you think about the comparison pictures? Don’t they show what you would want from a 4K remaster and do you think the use of AI for this purpose is fundamentally legitimate? Feel free to write it in the comments!
