Internal documents show that Sony is afraid of being overtaken by Microsoft after taking over Activision.
Sony failed to prevent Microsoft from acquiring Activision Blizzard. The PlayStation manufacturer’s efforts alone give clear indications that there are fears for its top position.
Sony’s concerns have now been revealed in new documents that became public in the wake of the hacker attack on Insomniac Games.
Sony’s concerns are clear from the internal documents because Microsoft is in a position to “overtake” PlayStation with Activision Blizzard. Microsoft has “incredibly strategic value” through live service games, mobile devices and its PC storefront.
The documents don’t seem to be entirely up to date, but certainly no less worrying for Sony since they also mention Game Pass and Call of Duty. There were fears that Call of Duty could appear exclusively for the Xbox from 2027. A deal has now been signed that guarantees Call of Duty with parity for the next ten years on PlayStation.
Regarding Call of Duty, Sony was also worried that Call of Duty players would switch to Xbox for time-exclusive content and weapons. The Xbox Game Pass in combination with exclusive subscription benefits is also seen as a “massive threat” to its own PlayStationPlus offering.
As if Sony didn’t have enough to worry about, the day one release of Microsoft’s first-party games is also discussed, as well as the creation of a mobile store in competition with Apple and Google. They even admit that their own structures in this area “are already outdated and lag behind the competition.” According to their own statements, they want to continue to pursue the premium software model centrally.
