WhatsApp is getting a new feature for video calls that seems rather unusual for a messenger. Apparently they want to get closer to streaming apps like Netflix.

- WhatsApp is getting an update that allows you to share sound in video calls.
- For example, you can present videos including sound to other participants.
- However, this only works as long as you share your screen.
The Watchparty feature is actually more likely to be found on streaming providers such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. This allows you to watch videos with friends and family. You will soon have very similar options via WhatsApp, because the popular messenger is expanding video calls with a function that allows you to share music and sound from your cell phone with other callers.
The function is integrated directly into the video calls, but is apparently only available to you while you share your screen in WhatsApp. This means you will soon be able to add music to your video calls or even watch entire video content such as series and films with the right sound together via WhatsApp.
At least the English-language technology website mentions such options WABetaInfo, who were able to see the feature in advance as part of the Google Play Beta program. Specifically, the function was discovered in WhatsApp version 2.23.2618. According to WABetaInfo, the feature will not be available in voice calls.
WhatsApp is increasingly standing out from the competition
The beta function is currently still in development, but it will be integrated into WhastApp in a future update. What’s definitely interesting is the new possibilities you have when you can share video and audio at the same time. WhatsApp would not only be suitable for watching videos together on YouTube, for example, but could even be used for small video presentations in the work environment.
