2023 could well be the most important year in Xiaomi’s history; the year in which the Chinese company made two surprising decisions that could determine its future. To begin, the presentation of HyperOS, its new system based on Android which will replace MIUI, the layer it has used for 13 years; It should bring some big internal changes (but not many visual changes for now), which will allow the system to adapt to different types of devices.
And in just two days we will see the first fruits of this decision, with the Xiaomi car based on HyperOS. It’s no secret that Xiaomi has been independently developing an electric vehicle for years; particularly due to the large number of leaks the project suffered from, including a video of the car driving in real traffic.
Expectations are high, and based on the leaked features, one could even say that Elon Musk has a lot to fear from this new Tesla rival. We now know that Xiaomi’s first car will reach drivers throughout 2024.
Xiaomi’s car is coming
After months of trying to contain leaks, Xiaomi has finally confirmed the presentation of its first car for December 28; the exact date which had already leaked, of course. A curious detail of this announcement is that it was made both on the official Weibo account (the Chinese social network) and on the X account (Twitter) in English; indicating that Xiaomi is aware of the interest that this car has generated around the world. Even though the car is not expected to be available outside of China initially, it is inevitable that the company will use this presentation as a preview of its future strategy.
The name of the car should be Xiaomi SU7, and it would be available in three versions: basic, Max and Pro; It is no coincidence that these are terms more typical of a cell phone, but this is not the only influence that smartphones will have on the car. For example, more advanced versions should have face unlock using built-in camera on the B pillar, behind the door.

The infotainment system too will use HyperOS, just like the new Xiaomi 14 and devices that will be updated soon; It is therefore expected that the integration between the car and the mobile phone will reach levels impossible with current systems or even with Android Auto.
As is often the case with electric cars, price and range will be key. As for the first one, there is a rumor starting price of 190,000 yuan, or around 24,400 dollars, and the most powerful version with 101 kWh batteries would reach 800 km in the CLTC cycle thanks to its nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) base. All these details and more are expected to be revealed during the December 28 presentation.
