Welcome to our weekly Apple Breakfast column, which includes all the Apple news you missed last week in one handy summary. We call it Apple Breakfast because we think it pairs really well with a Monday morning cup of coffee or tea, but it’s cool if you also want to read it during lunch or dinner hours.
The only way to win is not to play
Merry (day after) Christmas everyone! And commiserations to those of you who have had to endure exhausting mealtime arguments with distant relatives who you don’t see at any other time of the year. Like every year, I did my best to follow my own advice to be the bigger person and refuse to participate, even though it was hard to ignore comments about my political leanings or how I raise my children.
And this also applies to small arguments, like stupid arguments about technology. If your uncle thinks that Alexa is better than Siri (which is correct) or that Android is better than iOS (unconvincing) or that Windows is better than macOS (absurd), then let him do his little thing. mouth. There is rarely anything to be gained by commitment. Neither of you will change your position and there are much nicer things to say.
I know this because, although I don’t consider myself an Apple fanboy, I am in an at-risk group. By the very nature of my job, I often find myself drawn into conflicts between technological clans and I almost always regret it. People comment on my articles, or send me hostile tweets (until I deleted the Twitter app from my iPhone, which was the best decision I ever made), or make comments pleasant when they discover what I do for a living. , and bam! The same old tedious debate is going on, and there’s no way this is going to end well for anyone.
The problem with fierce partisan debates (and yes, believe it or not, we’re still talking about technology) is that both sides find themselves pushed into extreme positions that they don’t really believe in. , I can hear that the charging setup for the 2nd Gen Magic Mouse is fine, as the fast charging feature means the cable only needs to be connected for a few minutes. And even if I were to win this particular argument, I would have lost my immortal soul.
Here’s the thing to remember when talking about technology: there are no sides, there are just products that some people like and others don’t. And you don’t need to wholesale subscribe to a company’s entire existence, flaws and all. If you like AirPods, that doesn’t mean you have to justify Apple’s labor policies. If you prefer Macs to PCs, that doesn’t commit you to a lifetime allegiance to Cupertino, or even a lifetime allegiance to the Mac itself. If someone offers a Windows PC that meets your needs and budget, you can switch. It is not a religion and there is no penalty for apostasy.
My view is that Apple is a largely admirable company, overall, with a decent-seeming CEO and a strong, pleasingly consistent philosophy and aesthetic that runs through most of its products. I love my HomePods and I love my iPhone, and most of the time I love my MacBook. But it’s still a company. For the usual tedious reasons: profit; organizational dysfunction; bad luck – he will sometimes make big missteps and sometimes behave in a callous and essentially indefensible manner. Fortunately, defending the company is not my job, and it’s not yours either.
