In the different Harry Potter films, numerous actors have appeared to play very memorable characters. Many of them rose to fame after appearing in the saga, but many others already had a very consolidated career, as was the case of Gary Oldmanwho played Sirius Blackthe godfather of Harry Potter, so he had to take on the role of a very important character.
However, it seems that the actor did not end up very happy with his work, stating openly that he thought his performance was mediocre. This was openly stated in an interview with Josh Horowitz in the podcast Happy Sad Confusedin which he has also commented that he believes that if he had read the books everything would have been completely different for the better.
I think my work was mediocre. I don’t know, maybe if I had read the books like Alan Rickman did, maybe I could have anticipated what was going to happen and, honestly, I think I would have acted differently.
Furthermore, he also believes that feeling too happy with any interpretation is not good. He has thus stated that “if I sat down and looked at myself and said ‘Oh my God, I’m amazing’, that would be a very sad day, because you always want to improve.” In any case, he considers that it is “a very personal point of view because in the end you are seeing things that other people don’t see.”
Whether you’re happy with the result or not, there’s no doubt that many people associate Gary Oldman with his role in Harry Potteras well as for having played Commissioner Jim Gordon in the films of Batman directed by Christopher Nolan. He owes a lot to both franchises and does not hesitate to recognize that his participation in them It came at a time in his life when he needed it most.:
At 42 years old I woke up divorced and had custody of my children. It was difficult because there was a change in the industry where many productions were being filmed in Hungary, Budapest, Prague, Australia… you know, all these places. So, I turned down a lot of jobs.
Thank God for Harry Potter. Thank God for Batman. I say these two because they really saved me, because it meant I could do less work for more money and then be home with the kids.
