This well-known character obviously won’t be the same in FF7 Rebirth. Some fans may not particularly like this change, especially considering who it affects.
When we look at the most anticipated games in 2024, FF7 Rebirth inevitably comes to our attention. It is the sequel to the 2020 remake and will continue the adventures of Cloud and his gang. On the other hand, it will not be like the original, and we already understood that beforehand. Major events have already been changed, and that will continue to be the case in this sequel. Additionally, we were just confirmed that a certain character would no longer be the same compared to the 1997 game. And that may not work for everyone.
WARNING, the following article contains SPOILERS for FF7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 (the original). You have been warned.
A completely different Sephiroth in FF7 Rebirth?
Even without having played Final Fantasy VII, most of you have probably heard the name Sephiroth. He is one of the most famous antagonists in the saga and has clearly left his mark on the genre. The fans were therefore looking forward to seeing him again, but what was their surprise to see him in Midgar several times. Square Enix changed the main storyline of FF7 and Rebirth will take a similar direction. As such, the studio will be making some changes to the big bad, as we recently explained.
Game Informer had the opportunity to speak with the game’s director, Naoki Hamaguchi, and he revealed some interesting information about Sephiroth. Obviously he won’t have quite the same personality as he did back in FF7. The focus will be on how he became the antagonist, but not only that. Of course we want that “Have pity on him.”
I believe that as Rebirth progresses, players will learn through this game to understand not only Cloud, but also Sephiroth.
A story that will deviate from the original
On paper, we already know part of Sephiroth’s past. Yes, if you played the spin-off Crisis Core, you know why it went under. But Hamaguchi seems to want to explore our man’s story deeper, which promises some nice surprises. We don’t have any further details to go over, but the community has already weighed in on what was said.
In fact, the scenario will probably surprise us all. Let’s not forget that Rebirth also marks the return of characters usually missing from the original. We’re thinking of Zack, of course, but he won’t be the only one, and we’ve been told that many times. “More characters from the FF7 spin-offs will appear in Rebirth », explained the director. It goes without saying that it will cause a lot of discussion on release day. We can’t wait to be there.
