This year, I took my first step into the Persona world. As someone who’s avid horror and very interested in visual novels and turn-based combat, you’d think I would have tried it sooner, but that’s not the case. A Persona game has been on my ever-growing backlog for a while, and when Persona 4 Golden came out for Nintendo Switch earlier this year, I decided it was time.

I started with Persona 4 Golden, thinking it would allow me to play Persona 5 Royale and the upcoming Persona 3 Reload game well since they are both standalone story. Having made this decision, I buttoned up my school uniform and headed deep into the mysterious yet cozy town of Inaba, a town inspired by Mount Fuji but also often filled with disaster.
I didn’t expect to be as hooked as I was with Persona 4 Golden, but Atlus has created very interesting characters and placed them in a world that feels fully lived in, and the combat is repetitive but engaging. satisfy. I wouldn’t be the first or the last to mention some of the creepy jokes or dynamics that come up as well, which definitely adds to the disturbing level of everything else, but other than that, This murder mystery oozes style and has a cast of characters you can imagine. Attachment develops quickly.
If you’re unfamiliar, Persona 4 puts you in the role of a transfer student at a new school for a year, which sounds pretty normal…at first. Far from the city he knows, our protagonist makes a group of eccentric friends, but it’s not long before bodies start appearing on the phone lines. that’s right. Persona 4 quickly takes a dark turn, landing on this ragtag group of friends – who are sort of like Scooby-Doo’s mysterious gang from a different timeline – to really find out what’s going on.
There’s also an interesting cast of characters to play; a coward, a tough guy, a teen idol, and even a teddy bear, you’ll find yourself bonding with these people and fighting alongside them in the dungeons. A dungeon that exists inside television, I might add. Yes, Persona gets weirder, which is why I love it so much. Whether you’re desperate to know what’s next in your relationship with Persona 4’s resident DILF Dojima, or you’re just eager to get to the bottom of an ongoing serial murder case, Persona 4 Gold Edition will keep you glued to it throughout more than 70 stories. Hour length.
This is a game that I’ve grown to enjoy talking about. As I played the game, my friends kept asking me who I thought the “culprit” was and if I was any closer to solving the unfolding mystery. There are endless topics to talk about. What do you mean my TV has a portal to another dimension? Why is there a talking teddy bear, aptly named Teddy? Also, what are these strange shadows? Having never played Persona before, there is so much to explore without feeling overwhelmed at any point. Bizarre, fun, and often beautiful – I’m ashamed it took me so long to play Persona 4 Golden, but I’m glad I finally got around to it this year.
Next year, I’m looking forward to seeing what Persona 3: Reloaded is all about. Then, maybe a year after that I’ll finally tackle Persona 5 Royale too…
