One of the most famous scenes in FF7 will apparently be undergoing some changes, as Square Enix recently explained. Be careful, there is a risk of a split.
2023 is over, let’s move on to 2024 and one of the most anticipated releases of the year: FF7 Rebirth. Impatience is beginning to show in the community, and we understand why. We are still talking about the sequel to the remake, which changed the events of the plot of the original. So what are we going to do now? For all we know, a scene well known to players is likely to undergo an unexpected change. And not everyone may like it.
WARNING, the following article contains SPOILERS for FF7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 (the original). You have been warned.
FF7 Rebirth, a work that could change everything
We hope you read the warning carefully because we’re about to talk about one of the most iconic scenes in FF7. It’s about the death of Aerith at the hands of Sephiroth, a tragic moment that will have shaped the minds of many people. However, concerns are raised given the changes made to the story in the first chapter of the remake. Will this legendary passage also be changed? For some fans, Square Enix will never get that far. However, the studio has made a statement that seems to suggest the opposite.
When asked by Game Informer about Aerith’s death, the company chose its words well to talk about it. Nevertheless, we got some interesting information. We are clearly told that we must prepare for a shock, even if we have already made the original. Tetsuya Nomura, the creative director of FF7 Rebirth, begins by explaining that one of the central themes of this work is “life” and that it is necessary to depict death in a brutal way. A bit like in real life, it can come suddenly and leave a big gap that’s hard to fill.
I believe that loss is something that happens unexpectedly, and it is not something so dramatic or long-lasting, but rather a situation where a person you have just spoken to is suddenly gone and will never return. I believe that the person who dies shouldn’t come back in this title, and that’s what we did with the original.
What fate for Aerith?
You may have noticed, but Nomura doesn’t directly mention Aerith’s name when talking about the person who dies in the Forgotten Capital. And what reinforces the fact that change is in the air is what our man says right after. Even if we know the scene like the back of our hand, we will sense something new. But what could he mean by that? Is it just another production? Or is it another character who will suffer a catastrophic fate? In any case, the slightest change to this passage will be up to the community to communicate. We want to know more and the answer is coming soon, more precisely on February 28, 2024.
I think the way we presented it is making a difference a new emotion and a new feeling for players who played the original Final Fantasy VII and newcomers. I was able to really show what I wanted in this title.
