Square Enix looks set to go all-in on AI in 2024, and company president Takashi Kiryu says generative AI has the potential to reshape what the company creates. The news comes in a New Year’s letter from Mr. Kiryu in which he talks about new technologies that can benefit video games. It’s his letter worth reading.
“Artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential implications have been the subject of academic debate for some time. However, the introduction of ChatGPT, which allows anyone to easily write or translate or engage in text dialogue, has fueled the rapid spread of generative artificial intelligence. Its release showed that the applicability of generative AI is by no means limited to text, and the following months saw a rapid succession of new services and content launches that extended generative AI to various domains with close ties to digital entertainment, including images, video and music. I believe that generative artificial intelligence has the potential to not only reshape what we create, but to fundamentally change the processes by which we create, including programming.”
