We would like nothing more than a good adaptation of Spawn on the big screen, beyond the infamous 1997 production by Mark AZ Dippé. In that boat is Todd McFarlane, creator of the character, who has made it clear that your patience has a limit that is about to be exceeded.
In statements to ComicBook, the artist has pointed out that, if no major Hollywood studio gives the green light to the project, he has several tricks up his sleeve in the form of independent production companies that will take on the challenge. “2024 will be my make or break, right? I’ll give Hollywood the best chance to do it, and if not, I have plenty of outside investors waiting,” McFarlane notes.
The popular Blumhouse Productions is in charge of shaping the Spawn movie since 2017, although there are not many signs of life about the current state. As if that were not enough, the actors and writers’ strike has slowed any progress, so McFarlane has no doubt that he may take a different path than usual if things don’t change this year.
“I’m trying to see if we can make the right deal within the norm of the Hollywood structure. If not, there have been a lot of examples, in fact a couple big ones last year, where people went outside the normal channels.” and it was successful. And people have done it before with independent films: you make your film and you find a distributor. I would do that in a heartbeat.
Fingers crossed, I’m going to try as hard as those who live within its limits. Obviously, Jason Blum is one of the guys who does things best. They tell me I’ll be able to read the script this month, so the email will go out this week to remind them that they promised me that. Something has to happen, something is going to happen, I know myself. Something is going to happen because if I can’t solve it inside, I will solve it outside. I know myself. But hopefully we can reach an agreement that keeps all the parties involved that have been involved over the years.”
