The success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT came as a bit of a surprise to Google, which had to accelerate the march of AI with initiatives like Bard. Compared to the latest conversational AI models, traditional Google Assistant looks extremely datedand if Google doesn’t wake up and integrate Bard soon and for everyone, it may also be late in this battle.
APK analysis of the latest version of the ChatGPT Android app reveals that the app can be configured as assistant on Androidthen being a few steps away and, incidentally, distancing users from one of its rivals, the Google Assistant with Bard.
ChatGPT as an assistant on Android
If you want to talk to the Google Assistant with an Android mobile, you have many options, perhaps too many: from a long press on the virtual button to swiping from the bottom, pressing the power button or l one of the many shortcuts distributed in the form of buttons. If you want to talk to ChatGPT in its official application, you either open it, or at most you can use the launcher shortcut, with a long press.
It’s easy to see how this poses a problem for OpenAI, as Google is in the process of integrating Google’s competitor, Bard, into the Google Assistant found on billions of Android phones. They are not going to sit idly by, but you will be able to configure ChatGPT as an Assistant application
One of the great things about Android is that many fundamental system apps aren’t set in stone, but They can be changed to others from settings, as is the case with the Assistant application. Gestures that open the Google Assistant (like a long press or swipe up) open the app we configure here.
It is the application developers who they have to adapt them so that they can be configured as a digital assistant on Android, and various data contained in the latest version’s APK shows that this is precisely what OpenAI is doing with its Android app.
Even if the matter is not yet ready, Michael Rahman managed to show how said Wizard is invoked, as you can see in the animation that appears above. It’s basically the same thing to use the voice shortcut which is now available in the app with a long touch.
ChatGPT Conversational Mode Available Today light years away from what we get when talking to Google Assistant, OpenAI therefore has a chance to convince users to make the change before Google has time to react. Will you get there?
