Do you want to navigate in 3D with Google Maps from your iPhone? We explain how to do it

explain, Google, iPhone, Maps, navigate

The three-dimensional view is something we usually enjoy in the most used map applications of the moment: Google Maps and Apple Maps. Everyone has their favorite, but in both cases you can “fly over” the cities in an environment completely faithful to reality.

Now in the case of Google Maps we have a new option that allows us use this three-dimensional map on our routes. If you are a regular user of the Google Maps service, we are going to show you how easy it is to activate it in case you want to take a look.

How to use 3D view in Google Maps for iPhone when taking directions

First of all, the previous step is update Google Maps app on iPhone to make sure you have the latest version. Apparently this function is active from version 11.109.0101, at least on Android, and I myself was able to verify that the function is active in the most recent version for iOS 17.

Once Google Maps is installed, follow these steps to enable three-dimensional maps:

  1. Open Google Maps on your iPhone.
  2. Click the white round button with the multilayer icon at the top right of the interface.
  3. Click on the 3D layer to activate it.
  4. Swipe up with two fingers to tilt the viewing angle. If your zoom is correct, you should see the buildings in 3D:

The next step now is to create a route, which can take any means of transportation. For that We select a destination and press the button to start the route. If the view has changed, you can zoom in again and you will be able to see all the buildings in three dimensions around you:

Apple Maps is also capable

If you prefer the Apple Maps option, you can have the same navigation experience. And here, no need to select a layer: just get close enough to the streets and make the same upward gesture with two fingers to see the buildings in three dimensions during a journey:

There are people who find this way of navigating more indicative (the same direction is reflected and we see better what is in front of us), and there are those who think it is more complicated since there are more elements on the screen. We can choose to use it or not, but remember: If you are going there by car, it is better to let yourself be guided by your voice and avoid looking at the iPhone screen.
