Warhammer is a crazy world. In Total War: Warhammer 3, for example, there are three different undead factions: the Vampire Counts, the Vampire Coast and the Tomb Kings. It shouldn’t surprise anyone if something in this world just doesn’t want to stay underground!
However, a rule system being resurrected from the dead has never been seen before, even in Warhammer. At least for now, because Games Workshop will soon release The Old World, a new Warhammer rules system that uses many of the basics of the very first Warhammer version.
The Old World is coming soon
It has been known since 2019 that Games Workshop is working on a new edition of Warhammer Fantasy, which has actually been discontinued since 2015. However, this new version has not yet been published and does not have a release date.
The latter, however, has now been announced and at the same time the gates to pre-orders burped. So anyone planning to return to the Old World soon can do so in a few weeks:
- The Old World will be released on January 20, 2024

This is what The Old World costs
As is typical for tabletops and especially Warhammer, you have to spend a lot of money for the new rules system. At least if, in addition to the rules, you also want to call a complete army your own to start playing.
- Basic box Bretonnia: Contains a complete army with new figures, the complete basic rules and game materials in the form of dice or measuring sticks. Costs 206 dollars.
- Basic box Tomb Kings: Contains a complete army with new figures, the complete basic rules and game materials in the form of dice or measuring sticks. Costs 230 dollars.
- Basic rules: The rulebook for The Old World summarizes everything in 352 pages. Costs 55 dollars.
- Radiant armies: Contains the army lists and rules for all playable good factions. Costs 40 dollars.
- Warlike hordes: Contains the army lists and rules for all playable evil factions. Costs 40 dollars.
- Unit Minis: For the numerous new characters you have to pay prices between 30 and 66 dollars.
What is that exactly?
Warhammer has a long history and is probably one of the largest and most popular tabletop games in the world. Here you build huge armies out of characters and compete against your friends. What you can do and how you can move is determined by a complex system of rules.
Warhammer originally existed as a fantasy version released in 1983. However, Games Workshop stopped supporting it in 2015, left the entire world in ruins and released Age of Sigmar as a significantly streamlined follow-up product, which, however, was not well received by some long-time fans. With The Old World, the classic rules for Warhammer Fantasy are reissued in a revised version.
Unlike Age of Sigmar, the system is compatible with the minis from the original Warhammer fantasy editions – although army books do not yet exist for all factions at the time.
Are you looking forward to The Old World or have you had little to do with Warhammer apart from the PC or consoles? Have you been waiting for Warhammer Fantasy to continue for nine years, or are you completely satisfied with Age of Sigmar? Which new characters and army books do you still want?
