The developer of I Am Fish has to lay off around a third of its employees.
According to a report, the British developer Bossa Studios will have to lay off 19 people, around a third of its employees.
The developer, known for games such as I Am Fish, Surgeon Simulator 2: Access All Areas and I Am Bread, will then employ another 40 people.
In a statement, co-founder Henrique Olifiers said the many AAA games released since September, as well as rising operating costs and industry-wide delayed funding decisions, led to the move.
Olifiers said: “As a result of this Blue Moon situation, we have had to make the difficult decision to redesign the studio to reflect the situation we find ourselves in at the end of this year and focus all of our efforts on Lost Skies. This means we find ourselves in the heartbreaking position of having to lay off approximately a third of the studio – including some of our closest employees.”
“While we do everything we can to support them, we would be grateful for any help our industry colleagues can provide in getting the word out about these great people – or better yet, hiring them as part of their team.”
“You will be hard-pressed to find a better game developer than one of these Bossians, who we will vouch for without hesitation.”
“We often say that making games is hard, but nothing is harder than seeing people you admire get fired. Ultimately, we did our best to avoid this situation and we are truly sorry for where we ended up.”
