In a (admittedly quite lengthy) video stream, Mark Cerny from Sony has finally brought hard facts about the hardware and performance of the new PlayStation 5 onto the table and they don't sound bad.

When the hardware was presented, it quickly became clear that the PS5 and Xbox Series X weren't that far apart – what a miracle, because quite similar hardware is used. The PlayStation 5 uses an AMD processor from the Zen 2 generation, specifically an 8-core processor with a clock speed of 3.5 GHz. A SOC is also used here, i.e. a combination of CPU and GPU.
The graphics unit is based on AMD's RDNA-2 architecture and comes with 36 compute units at a clock rate of up to 2.23 GHz (this will be interesting in terms of cooling). The graphics unit is said to deliver 10.3 teraflops and is thus slightly below the Xbox Series X (12 Tflops), which works with more CUs at lower clock rates. Both GPU and CPU work with variable clock rates.
16 GB of GDDR6 are used for the memory, which allow up to 448 GB / bandwidth via a 256-bit memory interface. Microsoft is also a bit broader here with 320bit and correspondingly more bandwidth. However, Sony does not seem to split the memory, but apparently relies entirely on shared memory between the GPU and CPU.
Sony also installs a fast SSD drive and achieves a whopping 5.5 GB / s (RAW). The Xbox is much slower (2.4 GB / s), which in practice, however, will hardly be noticed in terms of charging times. But the Sony SSD with 825 GB is significantly smaller than the Xbox version with 1 TB.
Additional features include an expansion slot for NVMe SSDs, the option of connecting external drives via USB, and a 4K Blu-Ray drive. There is also a new audio unit with new Tempest 3D audio technology.
As far as the date, price and appearance of the console are concerned, we are just as smart as before. Nothing was shown of the PS5 gamepad either.
