Oh dear, halo It just can’t seem to catch a break, as the long-rumored battle royale spin-off may have been cancelled.
That’s the news from Shpeshal_Nick of the XboxEra Podcast, a regular and reliable source of insider information about the world of Xbox, who says he recently received a message claiming that the Halo battle royale game has been cancelled. We already know that developer Certain Affinity is working on Project Halo, believed to be a battle royale game known internally as Project Tatanka. The claim that the game was canceled was also confirmed by Jon Clarke (aka _Sikamikanico_), who also received the news that the game was canceled or at least put on hold.
The caveat here is that all of these are just rumors, as Halo Battle Royale was never officially announced, so this is essentially a rumor within a rumor. Whatever Certain Affinity is working on, it’s been in the works since at least 2020, and around 100 people are expected to be involved, but who knows if the scope has expanded or narrowed by then. Back in 2022, Certain Affinity did note that it was “deepening” its relationship with Halo Infinite developer 343 Industries, so there were questions about how that relationship might change.

Whatever the future holds for Halo video games, and despite Infinite’s struggles, there’s one thing we know is coming: a second season of the Paramount-produced Halo TV series. Paramount debuted the eponymous ring in the first trailer for season 2, which is kind of funny, it took us an entire season to see Halo, but hey, sometimes you’ve got to play the long game, right?
