Since its takeover by Disney in October 2012 for the hefty sum of $4.05 billion, the Star Wars franchise has lost some of its luster. A decade later, projects for cinema and/or Disney+ are piling up, but also cancellations. A film conceived by the makers of Game of Thrones will never see the light of day. He had everything to win over the fans!

The waltz of Star Wars projects that were officially announced (or not) then eventually canceled or disappeared has never been more dizzying than in 2023-2024. We can no longer count the series and/or films (format changes are commonplace) whose setting is the most famous of the distant galaxies that disappear from the radar screens. The saga could have benefited from Guillermo del Toro’s expertise, truly embracing the Western genre and focusing on a group of rebel pilots from the Rogue Squadron, but that’s not the case. However, The cancellation of this other project, which focused on the birth of the first Jedi, should anger fans of the universe initiated by George Lucas in 1977 with Episode IV – A New Hope.
The canceled film Star Wars: The First Jedi
The makers of Game of Thrones, but also the future science fiction series The Three-Body Problem (Netflix), recently discussed their canceled Star Wars film project. As the name suggests, the plot of The First Jedi was intended to focus on the “birth” of the first Jedi, the appearance of the Jedi Order, and the creation of the first lightsaber. During an interview given by Daniel Weiss and David Benioff to our colleagues at The Hollywood Reporterthey returned to the cancellation of “The First Jedi”:
We wanted to do The First Jedi. Basically, how the Jedi Order appeared, why it appeared, the first lightsaber… – David Benioff
And we were very upset when (Rian Johnson) called his movie The Last Jedi. It completely destroyed the obvious title of what we were working on. -Daniel Weiss
(Lucasfilm) ultimately didn’t want to do the story “The First Jedi.” We had a very specific story idea in mind and they ultimately decided they didn’t want to do it. And we totally get it. It’s their business and their intellectual property, but we weren’t the droids they were looking for. -David Benioff
The two filmmakers hold no grudge against Rian Johnson, with whom they are also friends, or against Disney, who did not throw the main principles of “The First Jedi” into the trash. As a matter of fact, Lucasfilm recently announced the production of “Dawn of the Jedi,” directed by James Mangold. (Logan, Le Mans 66, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny). This new stone brought to the Star Wars Memorial is said to represent the arrival of the first Jedi. So Daniel Weiss and David Benioff’s film will see the light of day in a sense, but without them.
