In a somewhat strange move, Longwo Five Virtues Studio Decided to release Like a Dragon: Unlimited Wealth New Game Plus mode behind a paywall.
New add-on modes for games are very common these days, at least among the big AAA releases, as they can provide players with new challenges and make it easier to clear things like trophies on a second run while still retaining all the content Your unlocked. For some reason, though, ahead of Yakuza: Infinite Fortune’s release next week, RGG has revealed some bonus content coming with the more expensive version of the game, and one of the new additions is the new Game Plus mode. In order to unlock the new game, you need to choose the Deluxe or Ultimate Edition of the game, as they both come with the Master Vacation Bundle that includes the mode.

The rest of the bundle makes sense, as it comes with a bonus dungeon, a special Sujimon (like Dragon’s own take on Pokemon), more resort guests, and more costumes. But generally speaking, most developers release new games for free, even if they are released some time after release, as was the case with Alan Wake 2 and Spider-Man 2. To be clear, the special editions of these games aren’t the cheapest either – the standard edition only comes with the base game and costs £60/$70 on Steam, with the deluxe edition costing £75/$85, The Ultimate Edition costs a whopping £95/$110. This only applies to digital content!
If you’re a little annoyed by this decision, you’re not alone, as Kazuma Kiryu’s English voice actor Yong Yea also expressed his displeasure with the decision Twitter. “I have expressed this position in the past and will express it again,” Yae wrote. “No game should have New Game Plus locked behind a paywall. Doing so undermines the goodwill and replayability of the community. sex, it’s a net negative in the long run. It should be a base feature or a free update for any game that supports it.”
Neither RGG nor publisher Sega have commented yet (if they have plans to do so), but if they do, they’ll need to do so soon as Yakuza: Infinite Fortune is set to release next week on January 26th.
