The Xiaomi 14 Ultra is said to have satellite communication or satellite connectivity. This means that it is not the only cell phone in the Xiaomi cosmos that, at least according to rumors, will be equipped with such technology. The Xiaomi MIX Flip should also have such a feature in addition to being a clamshell smartphone.
Competitor Honor will probably also equip at least one version of the Find X7 Ultra with satellite communication. At least that’s what the online magazine thinks Gizmochina. The Honor Magic 6 Pro is also probably equipped with such a function.
For some of the devices, it is unclear whether they will even appear outside of China. Even if it is likely that at least the Xiaomi 14 Ultra will also be released here, the smartphone in other regions does not necessarily have to be equipped with satellite communication.
This is what satellite communication can do
How satellite communication is used seems to differ between different providers. Apple now also offers emergency calls via satellite for the iPhone 14 in Germany. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 already contains, at least theoretically, the function of establishing a connection to the Iridium network via satellite. Bullitt once introduced a cell phone that could send messages via satellite if a subscription was taken out.
Theoretically, internet via satellite is also possible, as Starlink proves. The hardware used for this is also a lot larger than a smartphone. Samsung rejected emergency calls via satellite for the Galaxy S23. Regardless of this, many smartphones also use satellite systems such as GPS, which is usually not what is meant by “satellite communication”.
