The creator of Dragon’s Dogma 2 made a remarkable release a few days ago. During a discussion about exploration in video games, he took the liberty of expressing his opinion on certain modern open worlds.

Of course, one of the most important things about open-world gaming is the feeling of constant exploration. Many systems and tricks can be implemented to support the player on his journey through equally different locations. But these techniques can sometimes hinder the enjoyment of the game, at least according to the creator of Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Let the player develop

In fact, in an interview with IGN, Hideaki Itsuno expressed his views on the ease of traveling in the open world. For him, we shouldn’t introduce too many systems that make exploration easier, allowing the player to go his own way. He even took the liberty of making a small, thoughtful dig at certain current open worlds:

Is traveling boring? That is not true. This is only a problem because your game is boring. All you have to do is make the trip fun.

Although some bullock carts and other vehicles will be present Dragon’s Dogma 2No system will allow for smooth exploration. In fact, the developers have placed great emphasis on being able to encounter anything at any time. And it is a concept that we have already found in the previous work. The journey was made on foot, and while walking through the forest one could come face to face with a chimera or a cyclops. Although this approach may put off some people, it remains original compared to other games of the same type.

Exploring the open world: different ways to do it

It’s true that open world games offer many systems that make exploration easier. Some choose mounts that can be tamed to travel the world on their backs. This is the case, for example, in BOTW, where we travel through the plains of Hyrule with our trusty steed. Others implement the use of vehicles, as in the saga Far away or in games GTA, which makes exploration much easier. But everyone in the open world agrees on one point, and fortunately: Teleportation points.

Without it, it is complicated to travel the hundreds or even thousands of kilometers that separate the ends of the map. But here too we see differences. While some games like TOTK allow us to travel to any of these points whenever we want, others like Palworld require players to travel to one of these points to fast travel. In short, the conditions for exploring the open world are at the discretion of the developers. But as long as the experience is satisfactory, there is no reason for a scandal.
