On March 23, Half-Life has to go first: Alyx, but Gabe Newell already has a plan for how Valve will continue afterwards: into the matrix. In other words, a completely digital world through which we log in with the help of our brains and would therefore hardly be distinguishable from the real world. Just like in the film of the Wachowski siblings with Keanu Reeves.
He explained this to our colleagues from IGN together with the designer of Half-Life: Alyx Robin Walker in an interview. In it, the two not only talk about the past of Half-Life, but also the mistakes of Valve and the very ambitious future of the developer studio.
»We are closer to the matrix than people think«
Gabe sees Newell in the future of Valve Brain interfaces
He also sees this type of interface as one of the goals, the Valve within the next ten years want. According to him, we're technologically much closer to a system like the Matrix than most people think.
However, a number of problems must be solved for this. So he states that the human brain has an amazingly good interface for some things like motor skills and visual representation. Other aspects such as the feeling of temperature, on the other hand, should be very cumbersome.

The foundation of Valve
The co-founder of Valve Software not only spoke about the future, but also the past. So one of the reasons why the company exists is that Gabe likes Newell Doom and Quake.
At the time, he wanted to prove that it is possible Run games on an operating system like Windows. Back then, that was not a matter of course. He ported Doom together with id Software as a kind of »proof of concept«. Shooter's ports for all sorts of devices are a meme these days. Some have even managed to get the game to run on an oscilloscope.

Half-Life 3 can only fail – Why Valve fears the sequel
Valve's failures
For Gabe Newell, failures are one of them. However, you want to learn from these. For him, two of the largest are the card game Artifact and the Steam Machines. He thinks it makes more sense to think about why these things didn't work than to think about Valve's impact on the gaming industry as such.
The soul of Half-Life
Especially in connection with the upcoming half-life: Alyx Gabe Newell also commented on what the titles are all about. According to him, Half-Life is always about »To solve interesting problems«. In the case of the spin-off that will appear on March 23, 2020, this is the problem of a good shooter in VR.
Half-Life: Alyx also became the favorite project of the co-founder of Valve. Portal 2 sits on its personal second place. The reason for this is that Newell was only very little involved in the puzzle game and can therefore appreciate it more.
More half-life games are expected to come
There will be more half-life: At the end of the interview, Robin Walker explains once again that further half-titles will come in the future. He made a similar statement in the past when he announced that the VR shooter will be "the beginning, not the end."
