Masters of the Air, what is it about?
In the manner of Brothers in arms or The Pacific, Master of the air is an American miniseries about World War II. The focus is on the 8th Air Force of the US Army, particularly the 100th Bombardment Group, whose task is to attack strategic points of the Third Reich. In a nine-part TV show, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks want to show us the courage, failures and triumphs of this unity that is so important in humanity’s most terrible conflict. The idea for this series is not new, as the two men have been working on this project since 2012, based on the book by Donald Miller Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Led the Air War Against Nazi Germany. In 2019, Apple TV+ reached an agreement with the two producers to broadcast the series.

For its part, Paris Match explains that a few months before the landing commemorations “Masters of the Air highlights the unique commitment of these troops and adds additional depth to the structure of their heroes“. But as previously mentioned, the show has some flaws that seem to intensify as the broadcast progresses. For Variety magazine: “ The first three episodes are almost too long“, And “Aside from Buck, Bucky and Lt. Curtis Biddick, the audience struggles to name the faces“. A feeling of being too big that you often feel, but which is compensated for by a very small achievement. Despite this shortcoming, the series is of very good quality and a perfect tribute to the army and these war heroes.
