Spoiler alert
This article reveals the history of Tekken and especially the seventh work. You have been warned!
This is it, Tekken 8 has finally seen the light of day! On this occasion, we invite you to look back at the history of this emblematic fighting game through a single character: Heihachi. If you’ve ever played any of the franchise titles, you probably know the horrors that characterize this character. He is featured in a majority of the franchise’s titles and is one of the most important fighters in Tekken history, but that doesn’t stop him from committing atrocities. A fact that is unanimously recognized since he has been voted the worst father in the history of video games several times, notably by the English-language media Kotaku… Exactly that! If you don’t know the franchise or this fictional character, this title might seem exaggerated. However, according to many gamers who follow the story of Tekken and the characters associated with this franchise, this is actually the case.
Who is Heihachi from Tekken?
He has been present since the very first Tekken (in arcades in 1994) and is the central element of the game. Far from being a conventional father, he is impressive for his 75 years (from Tekken 4, 52 in the first game). Musculature. His fighting style is karate, which he has mastered perfectly and has exceptional skills. Heihachi is a formidable fighter who is also the leader of the Mishima Zaibatsu. It is a mega company founded and founded by Jinpachi Mishima, his own father. Unfortunately, the two men hate each other for unknown reasons, suggesting that Heihachi has always had a conflicted relationship with his family. In order to take over his father’s family financial empire, he imprisoned him so he could starve.
He then meets a woman named Kazumi, with whom he will fall in love and experience moments of happiness with her. She ends up pregnant with a boy they name Kazuya. Unfortunately, Heihachi’s life is marked by a tragic event: the loss of his wife when she gave birth to their child. He will then feel great hatred towards his son and blame him for his wife’s death. At least that’s what players think until the seventh opus is released. In reality, it was Heihachi who killed his wife when he found out that she only married him to eliminate him and that she is possessed by the “devil” (she has demonic genes). To his great despair, he discovers that his son is also affected by this demonic gene. This begins the cycle of family hatred that Tekken players know very well.
Why is Heihachi a terrible father?
While training his son in martial arts, he decided to throw her off a cliff. It’s hard to say he’s father of the year after an act like that. Why did he behave like that? Just to test his strength and find out if he also had this demonic gene. As surprising as it may seem, the only 10-year-old survived his fall by giving his soul to a demon, proving Heihachi’s doubts.. Since then, the two people have understandably harbored a deep-seated hatred for each other. In most Tekken games they are constantly trying to kill each other. This rivalry is the heart of the franchise and has hardly improved, quite the opposite in fact.. Heihachi distrusts his offspring and even goes so far as to adopt another child of Chinese descent, Lee Chaolan, to make him Kazuya’s rival.
At the end of the first game, released for arcade machines in 1994, Kazuya manages to defeat his father and takes revenge by throwing him off the top of a cliff in turn. However, this fueled Heihachi’s resentment, who in the second work managed to exploit his son’s weakness to try to get rid of him for good. The latter was in trouble because the duality of his soul (angel and devil) clashed within him… His father therefore took the opportunity to cause chaos and throw him into a volcano. In the end, Heihachi hit his son twice to bring him down, which hardly makes him a loving father.
Unfortunately, this situation was not fulfilling for Kazuya as he was full of hatred and anger his whole life. The latter has become a brutal creature without empathy who doesn’t seem to value anyone. Kazuya will then have a son named Jin Kazama (who first appears in Tekken 3), whom he will also attempt to kill in order to regain all of his demonic powers. In short, loving fathers seem to be a rare commodity in Tekken.
The good sides of Heihachi
Sure, he’s not a good family man, but Heihachi doesn’t lack notable human qualities.. He shows a better side of himself with his favorite bear named Kuma (“bear” in Japanese), whom he loves much more than his own son. He also likes the fighter Ling Xiaoyu and so he decides to train the girl’s panda in martial arts to protect her. He values him more than his own grandson Jin Kazama, evidence of another rivalry within his family. He is also a laughing person who doesn’t shy away from making fun of his opponents. Although this is not a special quality, he shows a certain lightness that helps him to be relatively appreciated by players.
In short, it’s hard to be a worse father than Heihachi, who deserves his multiple-awarded title. However, since the seventh installment and the discovery of his wife Kazumi’s motivations, many believe that he is more of an anti-hero than an antagonist, as he was considered for many years. If you want to continue following the Greek tragedy-like events of this hateful family, Tekken 8 is definitely already available!
